Why I started creating at 65 – And Why It’s Saving My Life

Some of us are born with creating in our blood.
My mother had it. She loved making things — and somewhere in watching her, I caught it too. That quiet magic of taking something ordinary and turning it into something beautiful. It lived in me for years before I finally gave it the space it deserved.
I’ve been quilting for about 15 years now. And in March I picked up Adobe Illustrator and started designing surface patterns — still learning, still growing, still making mistakes. But here’s what I know for certain: creating saves me.
I work full time in corporate America at 65. Some days that world feels heavy — the pressure, the uncertainty, the feeling of being unseen after decades of giving your best. But when I sit down at my machine, or walk into my garden, or open my sketchbook — something shifts. The worry quiets. The noise fades.
Creating feels liberating in a way that nothing else does.
My mom taught me that without ever saying a word about it. She just created. She made things. And in making things she made life more beautiful for everyone around her.
I think about her when things get hard. And I create.
If you’re reading this and wondering if it’s too late for you — if you’re 50, 60, 65, or beyond and thinking the season for blooming has passed — I want you to look out at a garden in late summer.
The zinnias don’t bloom in spring. They bloom in the heat of summer, bold and unapologetic, in every color imaginable.
It is never too late to bloom.
Create with intention. Love the journey. And know that you are never alone in this. 🌸
