Signs You Might be Addicted to Quilting

A completely serious and totally not personal list by Dori Simone

You started quilting “just as a hobby.” You took one class. Then another. Then seventeen more. You told yourself it was perfectly normal.

But lately you’ve been wondering. So as a public service — and absolutely NOT because I’m describing myself — here are the signs.

1. Your fabric stash has its own zip code.

You don’t have a fabric collection. You have a fabric situation. There are bins. There are shelves. There is that one bag you haven’t opened since 2019 that you’re honestly a little afraid of now.

2. You’ve said “I’ll just cut one more piece” at midnight.

And then it was 2am. And you had a whole quilt top done. And zero regrets.

3. You judge every piece of clothing by whether it would make a good quilt.

That shirt at Target? Terrible blouse. AMAZING quilt fabric. You didn’t buy it but you thought about it for three days.

4. You have a favorite rotary cutter and you will fight someone over it.

Not all rotary cutters are created equal. Yours is perfect. Nobody touches it. Not even you sometimes — it’s too precious.

5. You’ve bought fabric “for a specific project” that doesn’t exist yet.

The project will come to you. The fabric just needed a home in the meantime. This is called planning ahead and it is very responsible.

6. Your non-quilting friends think you “just sew stuff.”

Just sew stuff. JUST SEW STUFF. You smile politely. Inside you are writing a very long letter.

7. You’ve cried over a quilt.

Not because something went wrong. Because it was so beautiful. Because you made it with your own hands. Because your mom would have loved it. Yeah. That kind of crying.

8. You have more WIPs than you have years left on earth.

WIP = Work In Progress for the uninitiated. You have approximately 47 of them. You started a new one last Tuesday. You regret nothing.

9. You’ve reorganized your fabric by color at least once.

And then by fabric type. And then by project. And then by color again. It took a whole Saturday. It was the best Saturday of your life.

10. Your idea of a perfect day involves a rotary cutter, good music, and absolutely nobody asking you anything.

No emails. No errands. Just fabric, your cutting mat, and the deeply satisfying sound of a fresh blade on a good ruler. This is what peace feels like.

If you nodded at three or more of these — welcome home friend. You are one of us.

Pull up a chair, grab your seam ripper, and stay a while. You belong here.
